Satellite Control Applications and Data Management

Since its inception, Telesat has developed much of its own satellite control software. Telesat has experience in designing and implementing software for the control and monitoring of many of the commercial geosynchronous satellite models that have been produced in the last 25 years. This includes currently available satellites, such as the BS376, BS601, BS702, LM A2100, LS1300, and E3000. Products available from Telesat include:

Telemetry/commanding/ranging data storage:

  • Scaleable Data Management (SDM) - a high performance telemetry/commanding/ranging archiving and data distribution system. SDM is capable of storing years of raw, processed, and statistical data for multiple spacecraft, while simultaneously supporting hundreds of real-time data monitors on a distributed network. SDM is compatible with all commercial spacecraft, and can be adapted to interface to any real-time system. Currently, SDM supports interfaces to several of the most popular real-time systems available on the market today.
  • SDM also acts as the interface between customer real-time systems and Telesat’s Flight Dynamics product.

Telemetry/commanding/ranging applications:

  • Videochart - an electronic strip-chart recorder for both historical and real-time trace plots. Supports multiple plots per display window, with both auto-scaling and manual scaling.
  • Satellite Operations Graphical User Display (SOGUD) - an advanced alphanumerics and graphics display environment, easily customizable by the user. Since SOGUD is written in Java, it can be installed on PCs running Linux or Windows, providing an inexpensive display system for engineers and operators.
  • In-Orbit Test (IOT) - IOT supports automated in-orbit testing of satellite bus and payload functions from a remote location. This product was successfully used during Anik F1R's in-orbit test phase, and was a major factor in Telesat's fastest in-orbit test ever. This product will appeal to operators and manufacturers who need to test a satellite without having to post engineers for lengthy periods of time at a remote earth station.
