Canadian Broadcasters' Carrier of Choice
Recognizing the ubiquity of coverage, high quality, and cost effectiveness of satellite as a broadcast distribution medium, most of Canada's national and regional television services use Telesat's satellites to distribute their programming across the country. Major broadcasters include the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the CTV Network, Canwest-Global television network, and Groupe TVA Inc. Telesat works side-by-side with the nations’ broadcasters to ensure they have reliable and robust service as their broadcasting communication needs evolve. Almost all the television signals in Canada are distributed by Telesat satellites.
Telesat also provides North American broadcasters with access to space segment for occasional use broadcasting. Applications include on-the-spot news reporting from mobile units, and coverage of special events of public interest.
Since the broadcasting industry is a major component of Telesat's domestic service base, the Company has long taken a leading role in the development and advancement of new broadcast technologies, including digital video compression and direct-to-home services.
